I am an experienced proofreader of academic work – theses and dissertations for doctoral and
Master’s programmes, and papers for publication in journals.
Most academic institutions have clear policies in place about what is – and what is not – permissible when proofreading a student’s work. The general rule is that the final paper must be the student’s own work, so my task as a proofreader is to spot mistakes (eg typos, punctuation errors), to ensure consistency of presentation and to highlight any passages where the meaning may be unclear, but not to intrude on the content in any way. For each project, I will work within the institution’s specific guidelines.
In addition to my wider training, I have taken two courses provided by my professional body of specific relevance to academic proofreading – on ‘Proofreading Theses and Dissertations’ and on ‘References’.
